Requesting Public Records in Everett

Under MGL Chapter 66, Section 10, any person has the right to request public records from Everett city agencies. The city must respond within 10 business days. Everett designates a Records Access Officer (RAO) to manage these requests. You can reach the RAO by emailing cityclerk@cityofeverett.com, calling (617) 394-2210, or using the online portal. Requests can also be submitted in writing by mail or in person at City Hall.

No reason is required to make a request. You do not need to be an Everett resident. Requests can come from anyone. Be specific about what records you want, including dates, parties involved, or document types, to help staff locate them efficiently. If a record is held by a different city department, the clerk's office can direct your request to the right place. The RAO must respond within 10 days, either providing the records, explaining a delay, or citing the legal basis for any denial.

State fee rules apply: the first two hours of staff time are free for cities with more than 20,000 residents. Beyond that, the rate is capped at $25 per hour. Copies are $0.05 per page. Requesting records in electronic format can reduce or eliminate copy costs. If Everett denies your request in whole or in part, you can appeal to the Supervisor of Records, One Ashburton Place, Room 1719, Boston, MA 02108, phone (617) 727-2832.
