How to Request Fall River Public Records

Submitting a public records request in Fall River is straightforward. Send a written request to the City Clerk. You can use email at cityclerk@fallriverma.org, send a letter to 1 Government Center Room 156, or call (508) 324-2220 to ask how to submit. No special form is needed. Describe the records you want, including a date range and any names or case numbers that help narrow the search.

The city has 10 business days to respond. It can ask for a 5-day extension on large or complex requests. If you do not hear back, that is treated as a denial and you can appeal. The law puts the burden on the agency to prove any exemption. You do not need to say why you want the records.

If your request is denied, you can appeal to the Supervisor of Records at One Ashburton Place, Room 1719, Boston, MA 02108. The process is free. You can also email pre@sec.state.ma.us. Appeals must be filed within 90 days of a denial. The Supervisor can order the agency to release records and refer cases of non-compliance to the Attorney General.

Keep requests focused. Ask for specific documents by name, date, or type rather than broad categories. This helps the city find the records faster and reduces the chance of a fee estimate for hours of staff time. If you are not sure which office holds the records you need, the City Clerk can often direct you to the right department.

City Council and Meeting Public Records
